Hello From Taiwan

16 min, 14 sec  |  English  |  Tiffany Frances

Written and directed by Tiffany Frances for an AFI Directing Workshop for Women, Hello From Taiwan is a drama that observes a Taiwanese American family who have been separated from each other for years finally reunite. This reunion is short-lived, as the divide between the separated family becomes visible through their tense interactions. Set in the 1980s, this familiar world is seen through the perspective of the youngest daughter, Christy. This quiet yet observant girl is faced with a task to assimilate with her family, who she does not recognize and connect with. However, Christy’s previous trauma and culture shock shapes the interactions that she encounters with her sisters and father. The use of intimate yet claustrophobic cinematic techniques build upon the tense moments of uneasiness that the young girl feels. Hello From Taiwan takes a unique approach on immigration for this Taiwanese American family by highlighting the experiences post-separation which in this instance isn’t always cheerful and loving.
